Fear and shame continue to prevent many women from speaking out, and data collected are often insufficient and inconsistent, so many people are unaware of just how pervasive violence against women is. ONE IN THREE WOMEN WILL SUFFER VIOLENCE AGAINST THEM In 2005, there were 191,670 victims of rape, attempted rape or sexual assaults according to the 2005 National Crime Victimization Survey.1 More than 130 million girls have been subjected to female genital mutilation/cutting. The practice, most prevalent in Africa and some countries in the Middle East, is also prevalent among immigrant communities in Europe, Australia, and here, in North America. Between 40 and 70 per cent of female murder victims are killed by husbands or boyfriends in Australia, Canada, Israel, South Africa and the United States. In Colombia, one woman is reportedly killed by her partner or former partner every six days. Hundreds of women were abducted, raped and murdered in and around Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, over a 10-year period. Murder of women often involves sexual violence. V-Day's 2007 theme Reclaiming Peace seeks to make the connection between the worldwide anti-violence work of V-Day activists with our collective desire for peace and an end to armed conflicts. "We are saying that if a government supports the use of force, weapons, violence as a method of control and dominance, this models and gives license to the same kind of behavior at home," stated V-Day Founder/Artistic Director Eve Ensler.
