YULIYA LANINA
Visual Artist
Exhibited:
"Cry" tells a story of victimization from the lips of a vagina flower.
On participating in Vagina Festival 2007:
I believe that through awareness, education and
community building we can prevent violence against
women from being a frequent and commonplace
occurrence.
About Yuliya Lanina:
I view my work as an interaction of ancient mythology and modern feminist art, centered around motherhood, sexuality, and the psychic mysteries of the female. Having witnessed sexual violence against women and seeing my mother lose the parts of her body equated with femininity through cancer fueled my desire to use the female body as a vehicle for artistic expression as well as a multidimensional reflection of my world.
The content of my work is supported by carefully chosen materials. Lush and sensual objects like butterflies, feathers and flowers in combination with the celebratory colors of pink, red and gold are meant to seduce the viewer's eye and engage interaction with my work, while personal handwriting, used as a visual element, is meant to trigger mental engagement with the pieces, allowing space for individual interpretations. I often reuse and evolve the same images and symbols which serve as my visual vocabulary. I also strive to bring humor into my work in order to encourage levity and hope for personal transformation.

VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN >
At least one out of every three women around the world has been beaten, coerced into sex, or otherwise abused in her lifetime — with the abuser usually someone known to her. Violence against women and girls is a universal problem of epidemic proportions.

V-Day's 2007 theme Reclaiming Peace seeks to make the connection between the worldwide anti-violence work of V-Day activists with our collective desire for peace and an end to armed conflicts. "We are saying that if a government supports the use of force, weapons, violence as a method of control and dominance, this models and gives license to the same kind of behavior at home," stated V-Day Founder/Artistic Director Eve Ensler.
