MICHELLE DEAN
Director, THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES

On participating in Vagina Festival 2007:
Being a feminist isn't only about attending marches and rallies. The best kind of political statement is one that touches people personally. I'm committed to the use of art and creative expression in the service of causes I'm passionate about — like violence against women.

About Michelle Dean:
Michelle Dean is a director living in New York. She is self-taught, meaning she has no formal theatre training. Michelle began her directing career in Montréal, Québec, Canada, when she hung a black curtain around a courtroom bench and used the space to put on a production of David Auburn's Proof. The Vagina Monologues is her fourth New York production.

VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN >
At least one out of every three women around the world has been beaten, coerced into sex, or otherwise abused in her lifetime — with the abuser usually someone known to her. Violence against women and girls is a universal problem of epidemic proportions.

reclaiming peace

V-Day's 2007 theme Reclaiming Peace seeks to make the connection between the worldwide anti-violence work of V-Day activists with our collective desire for peace and an end to armed conflicts. "We are saying that if a government supports the use of force, weapons, violence as a method of control and dominance, this models and gives license to the same kind of behavior at home," stated V-Day Founder/Artistic Director Eve Ensler.
