Performed: Bleeding... (because I am a woman)

On participating in Vagina Festival 2007:
The suffering and the struggle for resolution in the intimate universe of female-hood connected my piece to the festival and gave me an arena for expression. I am inspired by life and as a woman, I cannot escape interpreting what happens to me and to the planet though my female lens. Sometimes I wish I understood processes that are completely incomprehensible to me, such as war, and yet sometimes I feel like I understand them, but cannot bring myself to believe in them. This festival made me analyze my artistic process and I found myself defensive- I am not creating this because I am a woman, but because I am a human being. I found that there is nothing wrong with creating something because I am a woman. And I let it be so.

About Teodora Koleva's performance:
This piece was conceived by my interest and research regarding early marriage. I pictured a child of 12 getting married to a man of 40. I pictured their marriage consumed. What happens between them? How does she feel? How does he feel? The piece focuses on the female experience, but it accounts for the male experience as well, since in this world, female and male are inseparable sides of one entity, whether it is fair or not, whether we like it or not. Even when we feel that we can srvive as an independent female, our internal male qualities rise to function. This piece is about processing and learning. Maybe you will be surprised by your quick assumptions.

About Teodora Koleva:
As a multi-disciplinary artist, I construct expression through choreography, sound, drama and visual representation. I am interested in beauty, but the kind of beauty that at first might appear ugly, or anything else, but beautiful. The kind of beauty that hides in the manifold surfaces of our existence and our physical and spiritual environment, that is there to confront us, test us and fascinate us. My challenge is to live and express in this often non-sensible world and contribute to it with the betterment of my voice.

VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN >
At least one out of every three women around the world has been beaten, coerced into sex, or otherwise abused in her lifetime — with the abuser usually someone known to her. Violence against women and girls is a universal problem of epidemic proportions.

reclaiming peace

V-Day's 2007 theme Reclaiming Peace seeks to make the connection between the worldwide anti-violence work of V-Day activists with our collective desire for peace and an end to armed conflicts. "We are saying that if a government supports the use of force, weapons, violence as a method of control and dominance, this models and gives license to the same kind of behavior at home," stated V-Day Founder/Artistic Director Eve Ensler.
